Brown "improved" Coombe Abbey for William, 6th Baron Craven, work on the 7,000 acre property began around 1770.  There were considerable difficulties in landscaping the area; as a result of the mostly flat gently undulating ground, the lake Brown worked so hard to create could be easily hidden from sight by a slight rise in the ground.  As a result, most of the excavations from the 80 acre lake were piled into a mound behind the house.  At present, Coombe Abbey is owned by Coventry City Council, who is now working to revive the landscape that has fallen into disrepair after decades of neglect.  Coombe Abbey is being used primarily as a park and there is also various wildlife that inhabit the area.

Above: A more recent view of the landscape at Coombe Abbey.  Much of the land has been converted to agricultural use or has been left in neglect, as can be seen in this picture, which was once a view of the house.
