Burghley was "improved" by Brown for Brownlow Cecil, the 9th Earl of Exeter. Burghley house was Brown's most lenghly commission; he was also contracted to make many architectural improvements on the house and the sourrounding buildings as well. Some of his improvements include raising the facade of the south front of the house by several feet, and building stables, and a summer house.

The above images show the size and complexity of the Burghley house. On the right is the facade that Brown raised. The views of the lawn show Brown's typical style of a flowing, natural looking landscape. The above picture shows the stable, designed by Brown and showing his typical style.
Views of the river and bridge at Burghley, the picture on the right is a closeup of the bridge in the left picture. One can see how Brown blends and winds his rivers into the rolling turf to create a natural look. He also blends in the architecture with the natural surroundings, as is seen by the design of the bridge and surrounding plants. Images and information taken from Source 3. |
